Midspring Development Update
Hi! I finished the 1.0 draft of Songs.
what
Yeah, I'm surprised too! But here we go.
so it's gonna kickstart like tomorrow right? (no)
Unfortunately not :( I have a great deal of planning to do between now and game release — getting a game from digital to print can become a full-time job, a thing I already have one of. I am hoping to start working on plans for this soonish. Here's what's on the to-do list:
- look into various publishers and see if that's a possible avenue for getting a physical edition published
- figure out exactly what kinds of resources I'd need to put together to get crowdfunding in action, either with or without a publisher
- set up a more concrete budget
- look into getting specific people lined up for various publishing tasks (i.e. art, editing, detailed layout, etc.)
- do a bunch of editing myself (there's still some stuff to tweak here and there)
- probably more stuff I haven't thought of!
so it's gonna kickstart in like july right? (who knows!)
That depends on the business side of things, and frankly it's likely to get complicated. Here's what I'll say: I want to keep any crowdfunding relatively controlled in scope. When my friend Austin Ramsay ran his Beam Saber Kickstarter, he made an explicit point of not setting up any real stretch goals; instead, increased funding tiers just meant more pay for him and his contributors. I intend to do something pretty similar, simply to ensure that the project starts and stays as simple as possible. Getting this done is more important than promising an extravagant buffet of artwork and setting bonuses I won't necessarily be able to deliver, and projects like these inevitably develop all kinds of unforeseen complications, so being completely sure of what I'll need to deliver should make the project much easier to finish. Hopefully this means a more reliable timeline for you, when I have one. As I've said before, I'm reluctant to make promises I can't keep, but steady effort has gotten me this far and I'm hopeful it can get me from here to the true and final finish line.
