Autumn DLC Development Update
Hi! It has been five months since I last put out an official devlog, and I thought I'd get down a quick post about what's next for Songs.
daybreak
It turns out it is quite hard to make a tabletop expansion when you are moving! It also turns out that the game design of Daybreak was, perhaps, less complete than I realized. So: what's done and what's left?
first, a brief reminder of what daybreak is and will contain
Daybreak will have:
- three new scenarios for Songs, each of which introduces a new crisis to Tamaris
- each scenario also introduces an entire new enemy faction with unique mechanics. These mechanics allow MCs to move more aggressively against players than in standard Songs.
- three new locations, complete with a full map and set of landmarks, one per scenario
- three new playbooks, each of which is loosely tied to a scenario (but can be played independently)
what's done
- Introductions for each scenario
- Enemy design for each scenario (finally! Scenario 3's enemies took several reworks to make functional)
- Location writing for each scenario.
- Playbook design for each scenario.
- MC guides and tips for each scenario (this also took quite a while, partly thanks to the enemy design element above.)
what's left
- Cover art (by Caro Asercion)
- Glyph art for the playbooks (by Yuri Runnel)
- Cartography (I have not formally checked that Annie JG is available for a reprise, but I'd be surprised to hear otherwise)
- Layout (yours truly)
how long it'll take
It is difficult to say! Game development is hell, and art's a side hustle for pretty much everyone on this project. I am hopeful that I'll be able to release before winter ends, but that's a best-guess scenario. Still, I'm hopeful that I'll have an update soon.
what comes after
I briefly mentioned a game called Sunblack in a previous devlog, as well as on some of my social media; it's a ways away from a playtestable state, but I'm hoping to get it there soon. It's a Sparked by Resistance game about being psychic weirdos smuggling fellow freaks into an interdimensional city to keep them safe. I will, hopefully, have an alpha out soon after Daybreak's release!
